August 1 marks Emancipation Day in Canada, falling on the date when, in 1834, the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire.
Emancipation Day presents an opportunity for people across the country to reflect, educate and engage in the ongoing fight against both anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism and discrimination.
On this day, Champlain College Saint-Lambert joins in recognizing this important day and the incredible contributions of the Black Lives Allyship Mission (BLAM) campus group in helping Champlain move forward in its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives.
BLAM is a student group, recognized by the provincial Forces Avenir awards in 2022, that organizes events, speakers and activities to celebrate Black history and culture and fight against racism. These initiatives provide a valuable learning and sharing opportunity for students, faculty and staff at Champlain Saint-Lambert.
